Gustav Klimt is an Australian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Art Nouveau (Vienna Secession) movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches and other d’arts. Amongst his figurative work, which included allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was most influenced by Japanese art and their methods. His mature works are characterised by a rejection of earlier naturalistic styles, and make use of symbols or symbolic elements to convey psychological ideas and emphasise the "freedom" of art from traditional culture.
